NLP & Sport Performance Excellence |

It was William James, the father of American Psychology who once said ‘If there was a way that we could control Focus then that would be an educational extraordinaire. NLP is now this educational extraordinaire.
People often wonder, what is this thing called NLP ?
Neuro refers to the mind (the brain and the nervous system), Linguistic refers to how we represent experience using our language. Thus, so far we have ‘NLP is the language of the brain’, and programming is simply the result of these first 2, ie how we use the language of the brain to produce the patterns of behaviour and results in our life.
Sporstmen and sportswomen throughout history have known that the power of the mind is paramount to sporting success.
Quotes:
“For success, first performers must have talent, then they must work and third they must have control of their mind”
......Valeriy Borzov, Olympic 100m and 200m champion, 1972.
“I think there are so many would-be clones, so many people who have tried to imitate her game. But they’ve imitated the most obvious thing about her, and that’s her (baseline) game. And I don’t think thats her strongest point, I think her mind is her strongest point.”
......Virginia Wade, Wimbledon Singles Champion 1977...
....speaking about Chris Evert, winner of at least one ‘Grand Slam’ tennis tournament for 13 consecutive years.
“The mental side of it played the biggest part: that was the difference between silver and gold.”
“...for any athlete who stands on the starting line, as much as 70% of the race outcome is shaped by the mental aspects.”
....Sally Gunnel OBE, Olympic 400m hurdles champion 1992, .
When NLP was created in the 1970’s, it was created in answer to the question ‘How do people create excellence in their lives, and how do they do what they do?’ By interviewing experts in their field, the originators of NLP were then able to package this information into a model to teach others, with the idea that excellence could be replicated.
We now have the technology (NLP) which allows us to work with athletes or sportsmen and women (by interviewing and coaching them), find out what they are doing in their mind that isn’t working as well as they want (or that they want to improve), and then by using the skills and artistry of NLP, the athlete is then able to use his/her mind much more effectively so as to increase his/her sporting performance.
There used to be a lot of sceptics who thought NLP was mumbo jumbo or psychobabble. However science is catching up and there is now conclusive scientific proof that backs up what we teach/coach and the results we get with NLP.
I worked with a young golfer applying NLP to his situation, with spectacular results. The testimonial from the boys father is as follows:
"Sam is a 15 year old talented all round sportsman whose main passion revolves around the game of golf. He has had significant golf coaching regarding physical techniques and a short introduction to sports psychology. However there was something still missing in his golf game – mental strength and focus. Mike Bell has provided Sam with this mental strength and focus with astounding and immediate results.
Through the use of two simple but very effective techniques Mike has made a real difference to Sam’s ability to perform when it counts. Firstly visualization and anchoring techniques and secondly the ability to clear the mind and focus on the task at hand have helped Sam immensely. Mike did not offer training in physical techniques but he helped Sam train his mind and through this created superb confidence in his ability to succeed.
Sam completed his session with Mike on a Sunday morning recently. His enthusiasm was infectious and he created immediate rapport with Sam. That afternoon in practice, Sam shot a new course record at his home club. Two days later he won the Junior Open at the Salisbury and South Wilts Golf Club – a course he had never seen before. Later that week he was runner up in another golf tournament at Puttenham near Guildford and the week ended on a high when he defended a title he had won 12 months previously at his home club in Aldershot. But this time his score improved by 7 shots from the previous year and he beat the reigning Hampshire Under 18 champion head to head.
Sam is now on a 1 handicap and over the next three years he aims to become a dominant junior player in England at the highest level and then move to a senior career as a touring professional golfer. There is no doubt that Mike has helped point Sam in the right direction with regard to the mental aspects of his game and I am very happy to strongly endorse Mike to anyone looking to improve their performance through increased mental strength and focus".
