NLP Sports Coaching Training for
Sports Coaches & Personal Trainers
Interview with Mike Bell,
 NLP Trainer & Personal Trainer

There are many ideas, theories and approaches in sports psychology today on how to improve the athletes’ performance. We asked Mike Bell, NLP Trainer & Personal Trainer, about how the NLP Training courses he runs can enable sports coaches (and Personal Trainers) to help their athletes/clients to increase their performance by using the power of their mind.

Q:  How did you get involved in NLP & Personal Training originally ?
MB:
My previous career was in IT, which I did for about 12 years. Ever since I was at school (and even before that) I had an interest in mind and body, exercise and psychology. One day at work I suddenly realized that I wanted to contribute more and help improve peoples lives by becoming a Personal Trainer and NLP Trainer. In order to learn about NLP I travelled to faraway places such as America and Hawaii to learn from the best NLP Trainers. What I learnt from these people was nothing less than totally outstanding in terms of how people can change so easily.

Q: There are many books written on NLP and numerous definitions. What best describes NLP for you?
MB
: I think NLP is about restoring choice to a person, so that rather than reacting automatically to an event or situation which may evoke negative feelings, thereby having an adverse effect on the body, that person is able to change their perception and therefore their decisions and behaviour. I think NLP enables people to function better, achieve greater results in life, both for themselves and others. NLP is about how the nervous system works and how the nervous system interfaces with language in order to produce better behaviours. What inspires me is that NLP can enable athletes to change their perception, so that they automatically begin acting and and behaving differently and achieving their goals faster.

Q: I see from your website that you are running a series of NLP Practitioner courses next year (2010). What 3 top advantages do you see that sports coaches or personal trainers can benefit by attending these.
MB:
Firstly, NLP gives us the tools to discover a persons’ model of the world, i.e. how they think, the filters to their perception that they may be unaware of that is causing them to feel and make certain decisions and therefore to carry out certain behaviours. Finding out how an athlete structures his/her reality is tremendously valuable. A problem well stated is a problem half solved.
Secondly, NLP provides the technology to enable unwanted emotions/behaviour which are automatic to be transformed into emotions/behaviour which the athlete desires.
Thirdly, NLP provides coaches with new ways of creating rapport and communicating with their athletes/clients.

Q: Can you tell me more about how your course can be of benefit to Personal Trainers?
MB:
Personal Training at the moment concentrates almost entirely on physiological aspects, ie exercise and nutrition. From working as a Personal Trainer 3 major areas stand out where NLP could apply, and which can take a personal trainers expertise and results to the next level: One, Rapport and communication skills. Personal training is not just about exercise, it is about the relationship between the trainer and the client, and the more effective you are with your communication the more effective you will be.
Secondly, clients need to have the right mindset prior to personal training, and they have to be certain what they want, why they want it, set goals, eliminate excuses and faulty belief systems.
Thirdly, you may have clients who also have various problems and health issues. For example, procrastination, smoking, habits (ie eating habits), addictions, depression, fears, phobias etc......now, your ability to help these people with your NLP skills will set you above other Personal Trainers.
These are just 3 aspects which are covered in my course.
This is the future of Personal Training.

Q:  Who can attend your courses?
MB:
My courses are aimed at people who are involved, or want to be involved in increasing their communication skills, and looking to increase their coaching skills. So, they could be Sports coaches, Personal Trainers, Managers, Therapists, Leaders, Educators, Business People. People who are interested in personal development will also benefit from this course. For a breakdown of the course content see my website.

Q: What makes this course unique and special?
MB:
Prior to attending my training, students will be sent a set of 32 cd’s from a live NLP training which they need to listen to before the training, so that when they attend the training they can put the material into practice, and also learn other more advanced skills upon which this is built. The course is 7 days long, each day being 10am to 6pm, and is in 2 blocks held over 2 consecutive weekends. This gives students time to absorb and apply the information before returning the following weekend. Also, to ensure the integrity and high standard of the course and to give maximum value, the class size is max of 12. The course is structured so that information and skill levels build on each other so that by the end of the course information will have integrated at a high level. Also, as well as various ways of thinking and learning new techniques, a step by step formula is used which structures the coaching sessions that the students learn. There are many,  many benefits people will get from attending my course. The best approach is that if people are interested then they contact me, ask me questions, and find out if this is the right course for them.
